At First United, we have been working on the frontlines of this neighbourhood for 140 years. We have seen the cycles of displacement, policy failure, and top-down decisions that have led to the complex realities on our streets today. But we’ve also witnessed the power of culture, of community, activism, and the fierce compassion among residents that defines the DTES.

Let’s be clear: It is not residents who are failing the Downtown Eastside. It’s the politicians, policymakers, and those who choose to blame the presence of poor people rather than the absence of justice and compassion. The DTES does not need to be “ended.” It needs to be respected, resourced, and known as a place of resistance, survival and community care.
